Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) was established and launched on the 31st March 2001.
Who is the head of the JMPD?
Angie Mokasi has been the acting chief since the former David Tembe vacated the post in April 2020. The City of Joburg is advertising for a permanent JMPD chief. The position has been filled by acting candidates since 2020. Public policing experts warned that the lack of leadership in the JMPD could cause instability.

This is a part-time higher education programme accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). It is also registered at SAQA. Duration: Minimum – 3 years of study (part-time)
What are the requirements for Metro Police?
REQUIREMENTS:
- Grade 12 qualification.
- Must be deemed medically and physically fit (as per below requirements)
- Valid Code B Driving Licence.
- Must be able to work in a team and cope with stressful situations.
- No Criminal Record.
- Applicants must permanently reside within the jurisdiction of Cape Town.
